Highlights of The Howard County Sign Code
Section 3.503(e)(2)
Here are a few important points about the Howard County Sign Code. Please read the points, and familiarize yourself with "The Sign Code" itself. Violations are a fineable offense.
- Directional signs may not exceed three square feet in area.
- There may not be more than four signs on an approach route.
- These signs may be placed in the County right-of-way between 4:00 PM on a Friday and Noon the following Monday.
- The above time period is extended for 24 hours only on holiday weekends, to cover the holiday.
Please also see a letter from Robert J. Frances, Director of Howard County Department of Inspections, Licenses and Permits, clarifying The Sign Code requirements for Open House signs. Highlights include:
- Open House signs must state Open House, not simply "For Sale" signs.
- The signs must identify a specific address in order for four signs to be placed on the approach route for that address. For example, if two houses on the same street are served by the same real estate agent, you cannot place 8 generic signs on the approach route.
