Howard County Association of REALTORS®

Our committees exist to help create and facilitate a close connection between HCAR's REALTOR® members and Affiliates, in order to provide the consumer with outstanding service and products.

Our goal is also to provide HCAR’s Brokers and Managers with relevant and up-to-date information to help them successfully run their offices. We also provide educational and training resources, community support and networking social events.

AFFILIATE OUTREACH

WHY DOES IT EXIST?

To help create and facilitate a close connection between HCAR's REALTORS® members and Affiliates, to provide the consumer with outstanding service and products.

WHAT DOES IT DO?

  • Affiliates provide invaluable networking, partnership and collaboration opportunities for HCAR's Realtor and other Affiliate members through social and networking events and education.
  • Maintain affiliate engagement
  • Expand the network by recruiting new affiliate members

TIME COMMITMENT

  • Attend monthly meetings as needed (1 hour)
  • “Homework” between meetings may include brainstorming content, reviewing materials, or writing articles (1 – 2 hours per month)

Broker/Manager Committee

WHY DOES IT EXIST??

To help the Brokers/Managers keep abreast of the key issues and to successfully run their offices. The committee promotes and strengthens Broker/Manager involvement in HCAR by providing a networking opportunity for sharing useful ideas, successes and challenges.

WHAT DOES IT DO??

  • Suggest topics and books speakers for luncheons
  • Offer a quarterly forum/luncheon to learn and to be heard

TIME COMMITMENT?

  • Attend meetings/conference calls when needed
  • Contact potential speakers for luncheons

Community Outreach Committee

WHY DOES IT EXIST??

The Community Outreach Committee exists to give HCAR members, from the Howard County community, the opportunity to meet, support, network, and work together on projects that benefit the greater community.

WHAT DOES IT DO??

  • Raises awareness and money to support community outreach activities
  • Recognizes members who contribute to the community
  • Participates in community outreach activities
  • Supports other HCAR committees when needed

TIME COMMITMENT?

  • Attend meetings (1 hour) as needed
  • Participate in at least one volunteer activity supported by HCAR (approx. 3 hours for each activity)

Education

WHY DOES IT EXIST??

To provide members with educational and training resources to advance their careers and meet their CE requirements.

WHAT DOES IT DO??

  • Suggests topics and speakers for continuing education and NAR Designations
  • Suggests topics, speakers, and sponsors for non-CE classes, workshops and seminars that benefit real estate agents
  • Researches and recommends which designation courses to offer
  • Reviews online education offerings
  • Review class surveys and instructors

TIME COMMITMENT?

  • Attend monthly meetings (1 hour)
  • “Homework” between meetings may include brainstorming content, sub-committee meeting or reviewing materials (1 – 2 hours per month)
  • Committee members are required to attend 10 out of the 12 meetings throughout the year

Fair Housing/Cultural Diversity

WHY DOES IT EXIST??

Focus on local and state efforts what promote fair and equal housing opportunities.

WHAT DOES IT DO??

  • As a part of its charge, the committee is responsible for coordinating local efforts to enhance student participation in the Maryland REALTORS® Fair Housing Art Contest

TIME COMMITMENT?

  • Attend monthly meetings when necessary
  • Promote the participation in the Fair Housing Art Contest to the Howard County Public

Forms Committee

WHY DOES IT EXIST??

Ensure the forms are opened for review in response to legislative or regulatory requirements, or significant changes to either market conditions or to industry best practices.

WHAT DOES IT DO??

  • Reviews the association's current standardized forms and makes recommendations on revisions
  • Creates new forms as needed (determined by market conditions and changing regulations)
  • The committee will be composed of an established number of REALTOR® practitioners, Manager/Brokers, Team Leaders, and attorneys.
  • Ensure that all members are made aware of forms and changes.

TIME COMMITMENT?

  • Attend meetings as needed
  • “Homework” between meetings may include reading, proofing, or editing forms (1 – 10 hours per month)

Grievance Committee

WHY DOES IT EXIST??

Provides a preliminary review & screening process for ethics complaints & arbitration requests, similar to a Grand Jury.

WHAT DOES IT DO??

  • Reviews documents filed by the Complainant to determine if a hearing is warranted.
  • They dismiss frivolous, unsubstantiated complaints & ensure only valid complaints are forwarded to the Professional Standards Committee for a hearing.

TIME COMMITMENT?

  • Each Committee member must attend the Professional Standards Training.
  • Meetings are not required unless a Complaint is filed in our jurisdiction.
  • Upon receipt of a Complaint, a meeting will be scheduled with those members who have no affiliation with the parties involved. (1-2 hours)
  • Committee members must not miss more than two (2) meetings they are asked to attend in order to continue being a member of the committee.

WHO CAN APPLY? Any HCAR REALTOR® member with a minimum of 3 years real estate experience.

Legislative Committee

WHY DOES IT EXIST??

Stay abreast of the bills that are introduced every year that affect our business

WHAT DOES IT DO??

  • During the State Legislative session, the committee meets regularly to review upcoming legislation and formulates the position for the membership of HCAR
  • Participate in county or state task forces, attend hearings as needed
  • Create the overall legislative position of the HCAR realtors for the local, state and federal government

TIME COMMITMENT?

  • Attend weekly meetings (2 hour per meeting) while the legislature is in session
  • Participate in county or state task forces, attend hearings as needed
  • When requested by Maryland REALTORS® lobby in Annapolis on specific bills and attend the annual lobby day

WHAT DOES IT DO??

  • Hold new member and ethics courses throughout the year.
  • Solicits and secures sponsors for events
  • Recommend classes and events for new members
  • Coordinate panel members, sponsors and materials for the sessions.

TIME COMMITMENT?

  • Attend quarterly meetings (1 hour each)
  • Solicit speakers and sponsors between meetings (4 – 8 hours annually)

Professional Standards Committee

WHY DOES IT EXIST??

Enforce the REALTORS® Code of Ethics

WHAT DOES IT DO??

  • Sits as arbitration hearing panel for complaints sent from Grievance Committee that have not been settled through mediation.

TIME COMMITMENT?

  • Hearings can last 3-5 hours

WHO CAN APPLY? HCAR REALTOR® members with at least three years experience on the Grievance Committee.

REALTOR® POLITICAL ACTION (RPAC) COMMITTEE

WHY DOES IT EXIST??

Protect our industry! Support REALTOR® friendly candidates both locally and nationally.

WHAT DOES IT DO??

  • Plans and implements fundraising events to supplement contributions received through the HCAR dues collection process.
  • Promote an understanding of the RPAC Benefits and Initiatives within the Realtor Community!
  • Host fundraising events

TIME COMMITMENT?

  • Attend monthly meetings (1 hour)
  • Solicit speakers and sponsors between meetings (2-4 hours annually)

WHO CAN APPLY? Any HCAR REALTOR® member who has given a minimum of $100 to RPAC.

WHY DOES IT EXIST??

Social committee brings together Realtors and Affiliates in networking and helping each other in our industries which all lead to Real Estate in some way.

WHAT DOES IT DO??

  • We plan and organize events such as Spring Fling which bring Realtors and Affiliates together in a Social gathering.
  • We help solicit sponsorships and set up for the Board of Directors Installation.
  • We help the legislative committee with the legislative breakfast once a year.
  • Suggests new social events.

  • Attend monthly meetings (1 hour each)
  • Solicit sponsors for events (2-4 hours annually)

The leaders of the future are building their networks today. HCAR’s YPN helps them do it.

WHAT DOES IT DO??

  • Select type of event, topics, speakers, and locations for yearly events
  • Solicits and secures sponsors for events
  • Clothing Drives, Bowling events, Happy Hour fundraisers and more

TIME COMMITMENT?

  • Attend meetings as needed

  • Attend YPN events (2 – 3 hours per event)
